Meet the Alabama legislator who really, really loves his guns

Alabama state Rep. Steve Hurst (R) really loves his Second Amendment rights — so much so that when he walked in a recent parade in his Talladega district, his pickup truck pulled a massive revolver behind it.

It gets even better: The revolver is actually a barbecue. Hurst bought the gun-shaped barbecue about a year ago, he told the Montgomery Advertiser.

Outside the legislature, Hurst owns a gun shop with a business partner in Talladega. In the legislature, he’s pushed pro-gun legislation including Alabama’s version of the “castle” doctrine, which allows homeowners to stand their ground against an intruder.

Hurst is a former Democrat who switched parties when Republicans took over the state legislature after the 2010 elections.
