Sen. Maria Chappelle-Nadal, a Democrat representing parts of St. Louis County in the state Senate, has been in Ferguson, Mo., this week tweeting about her experiences and criticizing Gov. Jay Nixon (D) and other Democrats for their handling of the situation following the police shooting of an unarmed black teenager last weekend.
“There hasn’t been a single white Democrat down here,” she said Wednesday before Nixon’s visit. “Mark my words, the Republicans might start showing up before they do.”
Among Chappelle-Nadal’s tweets are expletives and a retweet of an image of a sign that reads, “Gov. Jay Nixon doesn’t care about black kids!”
“You don’t know s— bc you never communicate. F— you, Governor!,” reads one tweet she sent in response to a tweet of Nixon’s.
Nixon’s office said that the governor publicly asked the Justice Department on Monday to conduct an investigation of the shooting, spoke Tuesday at a community forum at a church in north St. Louis County, and “has been in close contact with community leaders throughout the week,” according to a press release.
