May 21, 2011: Harold Camping’s predictions for those left behind

In a live Q&A on washingtonpost.com today, Dr. Doug Weaver, a professor of religion at Baylor University, went into detail about what we could expect if the world were to end Saturday May 21, 2011, and weren’t taken to Heaven. Below is an excerpt from his chat.

In response to the question, “So what really is supposed to happen?” Weaver writes,

“If the raptures occurs, the righteous will be ‘caught up’ and will leave the earth (met by Jesus in the sky).  If you are left behind, you will experience the ‘great tribulation,’ suffer etc... and this will end with the great battle of armageddon and God will ultimately triumph.  Pretty confusing to lots of folks!

He later adds,

“You would be left behind, and the great tribulation would start, and suffering and death would abound. So, it wouldn't be life as normal, if the prediction was correct.  We wouldn't be on the internet, I expect.”
