A party that deletes God and the capital of Israel from its platform, whose delegates boo the re-inclusion of God and Jerusalem in that platform for political purposes, and that invites the presidents of Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America to officially address their convention, is a party that has little space left for moderates and economically liberal social conservatives.
Take a quick glance at the dwindling numbers of Blue Dog Democrats in the House of Representatives. In 2011, the Washington Post reported that the official Blue Dog Coalition, “had 54 members in the 111th Congress; it now holds less than half of that number at 25.” The headline called Blue Dogs a “dying breed.” This week, the Post reported that this group is now “an endangered breed.”
How could a pro-life American support the Democrat Party anymore? How could an American who believes faith is important to our history and in our lives, cast a ballot for a party that boos God? And how in good conscience could an American who sees Israel as our most important ally in the turbulent Middle East vote for a party that deletes Jerusalem as the capital of Israel from its platform?
Does anyone believe the voice votes were even legitimate? By volume, this is a party that wanted to keep God out and delete Jerusalem. There were no complaints, no boos, about the platform’s endorsement of taxpayer-funded abortion on demand.
“Protecting a Woman’s Right to Choose: The Democratic Party strong and unequivocally supports Roe v. Wade and a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her pregnancy, including a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay. We oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right,” reads a portion of the Democratic National Platform.
Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards is right; the abortion industry has a president who’s on their side. President Obama had pledged to “never stop fighting” for an organization that did 40 percent of abortions in the United States. For all the talk about women’s health, i.e. non-abortion talk in these speeches by pro-abortion leaders, consider this – “51 percent of Planned Parenthood’s yearly clinic income – their only self-sustaining revenue sources – comes from abortion.”
NARAL Pro-Choice America’s Nancy Keenan said that, “women in America cannot trust Mitt Romney to protect our health. He would repeal Obamacare, taking away our access to better maternity and prenatal care, and the law’s near universal coverage of birth control. And we cannot trust Mitt Romney to respect our rights. He would overturn Roe v. Wade . . . “
First, Romney can’t overturn Roe – only the Supreme Court has that power and it would take more than a new justice to get to that point. Second, the “near universal coverage of birth control” is a reference to the controversial, unconstitutional Health and Human Services mandate being challenged by religious organizations and secular businesses around the country in federal court.
When it comes to the abortion industry, the First Amendment’s guarantee of the free exercise of religion poses no hurdle to their agenda. They have a president and a party fighting to get them everything they want.
Sandra Fluke, Georgetown University Law graduate who spoke at the convention, is wrong. No, a Romney-Ryan victory will not mean “an America in which states humiliate women.” Ask New Mexico’s Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, former Republican Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, New Hampshire Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte, and Republican Congressman Diane Black of Tennessee (just to name a few).
A Romney-Ryan victory will mean an America that has respect for the lives of the unborn, an America that acknowledges, not boos, our Judeo-Christian heritage, and an America that stands strongly with Israel.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s closing benediction highlights how closed the Democrat Party is to people who take the dictates of their faith seriously:
“We beseech you, almighty God to shed your grace on this noble experiment in ordered liberty, which began with the confident assertion of inalienable rights bestowed upon us by you: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
Thus do we praise you for the gift of life. Grant us the courage to defend it, life, without which no other rights are secure. We ask your benediction on those waiting to be born, that they may be welcomed and protected. Strengthen our sick and our elders waiting to see your holy face at life’s end, that they may be accompanied by true compassion and cherished with the dignity due those who are infirm and fragile.
We praise and thank you for the gift of liberty. May this land of the free never lack those brave enough to defend our basic freedoms. Renew in all our people a profound respect for religious liberty: the first, most cherished freedom bequeathed upon us at our Founding
We praise and thank you for granting us the life and the liberty by which we can pursue happiness. Show us anew that happiness is found only in respecting the laws of nature and of nature’s God.”
