In recent days, Virginia Tech has announced a variety of position changes and roster moves through Coach Frank Beamer’s official Web site. Here’s a quick rundown:
Safety James Hopper’s playing career is over for medical reasons and he will move into a student assistant role, primarily coaching the team’s defensive backs this spring. Hopper would have been a redshirt junior next year, but he will now transition into a graduate assistant position in the fall.
Hopper vacillated between safety and running back during his three seasons on the field at Virginia Tech. He played in all 14 games a year ago, getting most of his action on special teams.
The Hokies also have addressed some depth concerns following Tuesday’s news that starting linebacker Tariq Edwards will miss three to four months because of a stress fracture in his shin and his backup, Telvion Clark, has been dismissed from the team after being arrested for public swearing/intoxication last weekend.
Safeties Derek DiNardo and Josh Trimble (O’Connell) will both move to linebacker this spring as a result.
