For the ninth time during Coach Frank Beamer’s 25-year tenure in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech will begin the college football season ranked amongst the top 15 teams in the country. The Hokies were slotted at No. 13 in the AP’s preseason poll released Saturday morning.
Virginia Tech was also ranked No. 13 in the preseason USA Today Coaches’ Poll that came out earlier this month.
The Hokies were one of two ACC teams included in the AP poll -- No. 6 Florida State was the other – and no opponents on the Hokies’ regular season schedule were ranked in the top 25. Virginia Tech ended last season ranked No. 16 after starting the year at No. 10.
During the Beamer era, Virginia Tech’s final AP ranking has improved from its initial one eight times. But it’s important to note the AP poll is not used as part of the BCS standings formula that determines who plays in the national championship game.
Oklahoma will begin the season as the nation’s No. 1 team. Alabama, Oregon, LSU and Boise State round out the top five. You can find the complete poll here.
