Battlefield protection act expansion passes House

The American Battlefield Protection Program Amendments Act whose intent is to provide matching grants for the preservation of battlefields of the Revolutionary War, War of 1812 and Civil War passed the House of Representatives on Monday, according to the office of Rep. Rush Holt.

The measure will now go to the Senate where Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) has introduced a companion bill.

The legislation is modeled on the American Battlefield Protection Program of 1999 that has helped preserve more than 16,500 acres of Civil War battlefields in 14 states.

Holt (D-N.J.), who introduced the bill, is expected to make a formal announcement about the bill’s passage at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
