Events this week: civil society with Hillary and a major downer

While we’re killing time waiting for Congress to get back into town or for the voting to start in South Carolina, here are a few Loopy events that caught our eye.

First, in case you thought things were just getting a little too ugly in the public square these days (exhibit A: the booing of debate moderator Juan Williams on Sunday), here’s an antidote. Crook those pinkies when you lift your teacup, as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton convenes a meeting of those engaging in her initiative to create a “dialogue with civil society” today.

Sound like just what Washington needs these days.

And just in case you were feeling a little too optimistic about the prospects for the new year, the Council on Foreign Relations stands ready to squash those good feelings. The council is hosting an event Wednesday with the hilariously downbeat title, “What to Worry About in 2012.”

Thanks, Debbie Downer.
