White confirmed for SEC; Max Baucus, puppy killer; and the death of a young diplomat (read-this roundup)

Hide your pooches, it’s Senate Finance Committee Chairman Sen. Max Baucus. (DCCD113)
Here’s what the Loop is reading Tuesday:

— The Senate confirmed Mary Jo White as the head of the Securities and Exchange Commission — and she’s already getting an earful from senators.

— Best quote from Tuesday’s profile by our colleague Lori Montgomery of Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus (who is, for the record, a known dog lover): “You gotta kill some puppies,” [Baucus] said cheerfully, quoting an off-beat motivational poster he once saw in Texas. “You can’t do it all. You gotta make choices. It’s all priorities. You gotta kill a puppy.”

— The death of a young diplomat in Afghanistan has many wondering ”just how much security is too much, and at what point does it become counterproductive, making you more of a target.”

— A researcher who’s become the butt of jokes — and the target of conservative ire — defends government funding for studying duck genitals
