‘Call me Gangnam maybe?’ and the top 3 remixes of the summer

It has happened.

Carly Rae Jepsen’s summer hit “Call Me Maybe” has been remixed with South Korean pop singer PSY’s late-summer viral offering “Gangnam Style” by Michael Simmons.

If you are all right with, perhaps, summoning the Four Horsemen of the Internet Apocalypse, then, as Mashable’s Christine Erickson writes, “We’re either sorry, or you’re welcome — but please, use with caution.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Remixing big hits isn’t new, but, in this case, my (and others’) tongue-in-cheek hyperbole is more so for the fact that both songs have all but taken over the Internet — earning both artists much-coveted guest appearances on popular shows, including NBC’s Today Show and Ellen. (Although Jepsen’s latest album isn’t exactly arriving to rave reviews.)

But Jepsen and PSY aren’t alone in their having undergone a mashup marriage online. After all, isn’t everything a remix?

But some remixes, particularly this summer season, stand out above the rest. Here is an entirely unscientific list of the top three song remixes of the summer:

#3) Mister Rogers Remixed: “The Garden of your Mind”

In this case it’s not about bringing two popular artists together, but bringing the old with the new. This remix, created by John Boswell, was the first in a series from the PBS Digital Studios. Among other remixes, are public television personality and artist Bob Ross and world-renowned chef Julia Child. (Source: PBS Digital Studios via YouTube)

#2) Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” & ‘N Sync’s “Girlfriend”

Pop phenom Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” goes on a date, so to speak, with 'N Sync’s “Girlfriend,” and it doesn’t end half badly. (Source: YouTube)

#1) Gotye’s “Somebody I Used to know” & Aaliyah’s “Are you that somebody”

It has been floating around for a while, but the remix of international chart-topper Gotye’s hit with the song that earned the late R&B artist her first Grammy nomination tops our list of summer mashups. (Source: MadMix Mustang via YouTube)

Let us know your favorite summer mashups in the comments.
