Eleven philanthropists spoke with the Post’s Tom Heath regarding how much they have given in the past year, and their strategy for giving.
John Kane is the president of Kane Co., a Maryland-based firm specializing in commercial transportation, office relocation and records archiving.
Ballpark, how much do you give?
On track this year to give $200,000
Has the focus of your philanthropy changed since the recession?
We do a great deal more in-kind work.
How about the amount?
Thirty percent is in-kind.
How do you set your priorities?
Primarily for the poor and needy. We provide educational scholarships. Our belief is that the poor are still cold, hungry and in need, whether in a good economy or a bad economy. The nonprofits we deal with normally experience a 25 percent drop in donations in difficult economic times.
The culture of our firm was defined by my father, who believed that we have a responsibility to help even if it means borrowing to do it. Personally, I have never met anyone who on their deathbed said they gave too much money to those in need.
Do you make a point of separating your charity from your politics?
Absolutely. Political contributions are our attempt to invest in good government. Charitable contributions are made to support initiatives that require the private sector to step in and help provide a solution.
