Innovations in 5: Google Glass app lets you take a picture with a wink

Here’s what we’re reading today:

1) Now you can take a picture with a wink—that’s if you have Google Glass. A developer has created Winky, an app that allows Glass wearers to take a photo with little more than a wink. Aaron Souppouris of the Verge writes:

“The Winky app, currently available for compiling through GitHub, lets you power up Glass from standby mode and snap a quick photo. Mike DiGiovanni, who developed the app alone, says having voiceless control over Glass ‘really changes things.’”

DiGiovanni released a video showing how Winky works:

In other news, ReadWriteWeb’s Brian Hall writes that Vine could be the hardware’s “killer app”. That said, Vine has yet to be made available for Android users.

2) Facebook’s mobile growth is the key to its future. That’s according to Time’s Sam Gustin, who writes:

“Facebook’s mobile efforts are starting to pay off: 30% of Facebook’s ad revenue came from mobile devices last quarter, up from 23% during the previous quarter and 14% the quarter before that. To put that in perspective, Facebook’s mobile revenue as a percentage of total revenue in the first quarter of 2012 was 0% — zero.”

3) There is a fascinating long read on Wired about Ted Acworth, the founder and CEO of Artaic. The company uses robots to create custom mosaics. The process, which resembles the assembly of a bitmap image. is incredibly labor intensive, but is made faster and more efficient when done by a robot, as Wired’s Tim Maly writes:

“By mechanizing mosaic assembly, Artaic can make higher quality, lower cost mosaics than their overseas competitors. Once Acworth had satisfied himself that the size of the market for mosaics was good he hired Artaic co-founder and creative director Paul Reiss and together they set to work.”

Here’s a video from Artaic showing off the process:

4) So, what do scientists think of President Obama’s BRAIN Initiative?

“Arguably, a map of neuronal network architecture—not an activity map—is the closest analogue of the human genome for the brain. – Partha Mitra, neuroscientist and theoretical biologist at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

Scientific American Mind asked three top neuroscientists to weigh in on the sweeping project to map the human brain, similar to the Human Genome Project.

5) If you want to look like first lady Michelle Obama, there’s an app for that. ABC’s Sarah Parnass reports that the app, Michelle’s Style List, was created by Helen Barclay, who also created Kate’s Style List, following the fashion of the Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton.

“The app, which launched April 9, has an archive that lists nine of Michelle’s outfits, including the slinky silver number that prompted an Iranian news agency to photoshop a modest neckline and sleeves onto the American first lady in February.”

Disclosure: Kolawole’s sibling works for Google, but not on Glass. And Washington Post Co. chairman and chief executive Donald E. Graham is a member of Facebook’s board of directors.
