Edwin Roessler to be named new chief of Fairfax County Police Department

Lt. Col. Edwin C. Roessler Jr., the current acting chief of the Fairfax County Police Department, will be hired as the permanent chief by the Fairfax Board of Supervisors on Tuesday morning, according to multiple sources familiar with the process. (UPDATE: The Board did name Roessler as chief this morning.)

Roessler, 49, became a deputy chief in 2010, and was named acting chief in March after the previous acting chief, James Morris, left to take over the Vienna Police Department. Morris succeeded David Rohrer, who retired in October and became a deputy county executive in charge of public safety.

Roessler is a native New Yorker who has headed up the patrol division, the internal affairs bureau, the training academy, the budget and human resources departments and various other posts, as you’d expect of someone who had risen to deputy chief of the 30th largest police force in the U.S. He has been in law enforcement for 24 years, starting out with the New York City Department of Investigation before becoming an officer in Fairfax.

The board of supervisors maintained a tradition of hiring from within — no candidate from outside the Fairfax department has been named chief in the department’s 73-year history. Fairfax’s other deputy chief, Lt. Col. Tom Ryan, was also reported to be one of three finalists — the other reportedly was not from Fairfax — but Ryan had only recently been promoted to deputy chief. The third deputy chief slot has been left vacant until a permanent chief could be named.

Fairfax Board Chair Sharon Bulova scheduled an announcement of the new chief for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Fairfax government center.
