Council sets Sept. 20 primary to fill seat vacated by Leslie Johnson

The Prince George’s County Council set Sept. 20 for Democratic and Republican primaries to replace County Council member Leslie Johnson (D-Mitchellville), whose resignation took effect Sunday.

The general election is set for Oct. 18. In overwhelmingly Democratic Prince George’s, the winner of the Democratic primary usually coasts to an easy victory in the general election.

Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court Oct. 13. She pleaded guilty in June to charges of destroying evidence in a far-reaching federal corruption probe that ensnared her husband, former Prince George’s County executive Jack B. Johnson (D). Jack Johnson is scheduled to be sentenced Sept. 15.

The filing deadline for candidates is Aug. 23. Thus far, five Democrats and one Republican have said they will run. The Democrats are Venus Bethea, Thirl Crudup, Derrick Leon Davis, Casey Lewis and Arthur Turner. The Republican is Day Gardner.

County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) said he is backing Davis, a former school system official who came in second in last year’s primary, after Johnson.
