Gingrich headlining Maryland GOP dinner

Maryland isn’t usually thought of as an early destination on the presidential campaign trail. But for the second year in a row, the Maryland Republican Party has landed a high-profile candidate for an annual fundraising dinner.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has been booked as the “featured guest” at the party’s annual Red, White and Blue dinner on June 23. Last year, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney headlined the same event, which drew close to 700 people.

Gingrich has struggled to find his footing since what was widely viewed as a damaging start to his presidential run. Still, party leaders in Maryland expect him to be a big draw for an event that benefits the state GOP’s grassroots organization.

Tickets to the dinner start at $200 apiece. A $500 contribution secures entry into a VIP reception and a picture with Gingrich.

Plans are in the works for another event organized by the Gingrich campaign on the same day.
