Maryland's governor says the beach resort town of Ocean City is being evacuated as Hurricane Irene barrels toward the mid-Atlantic region.
Gov. Martin O'Malley said there was a steady flow of traffic away from the town Friday, and he believes a 5 p.m. evacuation deadline will be met.
The governor also says Smith Island is under mandatory evacuation.
O'Malley took part in a conference call with President Barack Obama and other governors and mayors of places in Irene's path on Friday. O'Malley says Obama wanted to make sure states were coordinating with federal officials.
O'Malley says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has been very responsive.
