“Richie Valdez” knew a lot of bad dudes — dudes who could get him drugs, handguns, ammunition, grenades, even a rocket launcher. But unlucky for the bad dudes, Valdez was actually D.C. cop Dale Sutherland, operating a sting operation out of a Northeast rowhouse. The Post’s Clarence Williams tells the story: “The team uncovered connections to a Mexican drug cartel and out-of-area gun traders, leading to federal investigations in a half-dozen states and a murder case in El Salvador. The year-long investigation gave authorities a rare opportunity to fight violent crime by attacking the sources of the dangerous weapons that flow into the city.” The final tally: $7.2 million in drugs, 161 weapons, and 70 arrests.
