Police Chief Cathy L. Lanier did her monthly Ask the Chief appearance on WTOP today and acknowledged that the police force has dropped to 3,830 sworn officers — the lowest level in about five years. About 100 of those are in the police academy, she said, dropping the force below the level she said last year might cause “trouble.” Said Lanier, who is battling a spate of armed street robberies, “It’s harder for me to do what I have to do.”
