Bryce Harper hits first Class AAA home run

(Dennis Nett - AP)
After waiting for 15 games, Bryce Harper drilled his first home run at Class AAA Syracuse this afternoon. In his 61st at-bat of the season, with the bases empty in the fourth inning, Harper crushed a 3-1 pitch from Class AAA Buffalo right-hander Jeurys Familia well over the right field fence. Familia, 22, is one of the Mets’ top pitching prospects.

Harper followed with a single in his next at-bat, raising his average for the season to .242. Harper, 19, entered Sunday with a .292 on-base percentage and a .322 slugging percentage. Harper has a history of starting slow at new levels before breaking out. Harper could join the Nationals this season, but he will first have to convince them he’s ready for the majors.
