Bryce Harper out with a bone bruise

Bryce Harper has not played the last three days in Class A Hagerstown with a bone bruise by his left thumb, General Manager Mike Rizzo said. Harper, the 2010 first overall pick, was jammed by a pitch in mid-June and has felt intermittent pain in his hand since. The damage is not structural, Rizzo said, and nor is it considered serious.

“He’s playable,” Rizzo said. “If it was Ryan Zimmerman, he would be playing. He would be playing if he was a big leaguer. But there’s no need for him to be playing uncomfortable.”

The Nationals have not placed Harper on the seven-day disabled list, which suggests the Nationals believe he’ll return in the next few days. Harper, 18, is hitting .322/.421/.569 in 67 games in his first professional season.
