Bryce Harper will be out of Nationals spring training games for “at least three days” with a strained left calf, Manager Davey Johnson said. Harper had hoped to return this weekend, perhaps even tomorrow, but the Nationals prevented him from even running on the calf today and will not rush him back.
Harper, 19, is competing to make the Nationals’ opening day roster. Johnson said his absence over the next few days would not have a significant effect on the Nationals’ evaluation of Harper.
“Not really,” Johnson said. “He’s not going to cut down on his swinging the next few days. He’s going to keep hacking. He’s just like anybody else. I don’t want to run him back out there and have him get hurt.”
This morning, Harper took batting practice and felt no discomfort while swinging the bat.
