Infielder Cesar Izturis has elected free agency and is virtually certain not to return to the Nationals, General Manager Mike Rizzo said. The Nationals designated Izturis for assignment Friday to make room on the roster as shortstop Ian Desmond came off the disabled list.
“Cesar was a great teammate around here,” Manager Davey Johnson said Friday. “He’s a class act. He really played good. He’s a good player.”
Johnson hoped the Nationals could retain Izturis, 32, if he made it through waivers, but Rizzo said that did not appear to be an option. The Nationals acquired Izturis off waivers Aug. 6 from the Brewers. Izturis, a 12-year-veteran, appeared in five games for the Nationals and went 2 for 4 with a double.
