As expected, the Nationals recalled right-hander Collin Balester from Class AAA Syracuse before Tuesday’s game, giving Manager Davey Johnson the second long reliever he has wanted in his bullpen.
Balester takes the place of reliever Atahualpa Severino, who was called up on Sunday and optioned to Syracuse after Monday’s game and did not appear in any games. This is the fourth time Balester has been recalled this season.
Balester is 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA in eight major league appearances this season. He will join left-handed Tom Gorzelanny as the second long reliever in the bullpen.
