Following consecutive taxing, extra-innings games, the Washington Nationals will put starter Edwin Jackson in their bullpen tonight. Jackson, Monday’s starter, had been scheduled for a side session today, so he is going to throw at some point, anyway. He would pitch in the game only if the Nationals run out of relievers behind starter Gio Gonzalez.
Both closer Tyler Clippard and his backup, Drew Storen, will be unavailable tonight, Manager Davey Johnson. Clippard has pitched two straight days, and Storen has thrown in three straight. Johnson did not tip his hand as to who would close tonight if the Nationals play into a save situation. “I have five guys out there I’d feel comfortable with,” he said.
With the Nationals’ bullpen having thrown 10 2/3 innings over the past two days, Gonzalez, “won’t be on any pitch count,” Johnson said, laughing.
