Lefty Atahualpa Severino, recalled yesterday, is still in the Nationals bullpen, but that could change soon. “He doesn’t really fill the bill for what I’m looking for,” Manager Davey Johnson said. He’s still looking for another long reliever to pair with Tom Gorzelanny, a pitcher capable of bailing out a failed starter.
It could be Collin Balester. A former starter, Balester threw four innings Saturday in his most recent outing at Class AAA Syracuse. Johnson implied that it’s possible Balester will replace Severino and join the Nationals on Wednesday.
For tonight, Livan Hernandez will try to make a long reliever unnecessary, which lately has been no sure thing. He’s lasted four innings in two of his last three starts, including one against the Braves on July 15.
As always, talk about the game right here.
