Jordan Zimmermann’s first full year off Tommy John surgery, if you remove his crummy run support, has been an unqualified success. He has a 3.88 ERA and, more impressively, a 2.77 FIP and 1.6 wins above replacement. In his last five starts, Zimmermann has allowed 11 earned runs in 30 2/3 innings, a 3.22 ERA.
The only unusual part of his season has been his diminished strikeout rate. Even with an 11-strikeout performance against the Braves, Zimmermann has struck out 6.6 batters per nine innings, 2.2 below his career mark coming into this year. Maybe that changes tonight.
One last-minute change for the Diamondbacks, who have won 16 of 19: Juan Miranda was not feeling well and was scratched. Xavier Nady will play first and bat seventh instead.
Talk about the game right here.
