Ian Desmond is out of the lineup to provide his hurting left thigh a break. His health has not deteriorated, but like last week, Manager Jim Riggleman wanted to let Desmond rest for two straight days, a luxury tomorrow’s off day allows. But Desmond isn’t in any worse shape than he has been. “Just a day off,” he said.
The Nationals today will try for their second straight sweep and a nine-game winning streak, which would be the second longest in team history and the longest in the major leagues this season. And, of course, a win would get them to an even .500. That would be accomplishment considering, on May 30, less than three weeks ago, they were 22-31.
For them to reach .500, Tom Gorzelanny will have to beat Chris Jakubauskas in a matchup of long surnames. Talk about the game right here. And follow the action here.
