The Nationals have not lost consecutive games since June 8 and 9, the final game of their series in San Francisco and their first in San Diego. Since June 10, of course, they have 13 of 16 games. They have also won five consecutive series, a streak that would be snapped with a loss tonight.
In Jason Marquis, the Nationals have the right pitcher on the mound to prevent that from happening. They have won five straight games with Marquis on the mound, and Marquis has allowed a combined seven runs in those outings.
In the bullpen tonight, Tyler Clippard will be available tonight after missing last night’s game with a tired arm. Davey Johnson said the three relievers who pitched last night – Ryan Mattheus, Sean Burnett and Henry Rodriguez – will not pitch tonight. Since Burnett is the only lefty, that’ll put the Nationals in a bind.
