One theme Davey Johnson has pounded home in his first few games has been the necessity of all 25 players contributing. It came up again when he was asked about Matt Stairs playing in Anaheim.
“You win pennants with 25 players,” Johnson said. “They’re all invaluable. You can’t win with 24, 23, 22, so my job as manager is to try to take care of all 25, and make sure they feel good about themselves, and they’re timing is good and play them enough. He had some sporadic at-bats, and he wasn’t hitting too good. We need his capabilities coming off the bench late in the ballgame.”
So, that’s just a little more insight into how Johnson will be going about his new job. As for tonight, if the Nationals beat the Pirates, both teams will have a .500 or better record in July. You could have made some money betting that at the start of the season. In Game 1, it’s Tom Gorzelanny against Charlie Morton.
As always, talk about the game right here.
