Henry Rodriguez, Chris Marrero begin rehab assigments in Syracuse; Cole Kimball pitches again

Nationals reliever Henry Rodriguez and a first baseman Chris Marrero are scheduled to begin their rehab stints on Tuesday in Class AAA Syracuse.

Rodriguez, 25, has been on the disabled list since June 7 with a strained right index finger, the same one he slammed into a bathroom door two weeks ago. The time away is also a welcome reprieve for the flame-throwing reliever, who suffered a recent tough stretch that saw him lose the closer’s role because of wildness. He has a 5.14 ERA in 21 innings.

Marrero, 23, a former first-round pick in the 2006 draft, injured himself during winter ball as he attempted to stretch for the ball at first base. The Nationals had counted on him to be a right-handed off the bench this season before he got hurt.

So far in his rehab, Marrero is hitting a combined 13 for 39 (.333) with two home runs and seven RBI in 11 games between Class A Hagerstown, Class A Potomac and Class AA Harrisburg. He recently went 6 for 22 for Class AA Harrisburg and is expected to begin his stint with Syracuse on Tuesday.

Reliever Cole Kimball began his rehab assignment on Tuesday as well, pitching a scoreless inning for the Nationals’ affiliate in the Gulf Coast League — the first time he has pitched in a game since he was injured on June 9 last season. Kimball, a 26-year old right-handed pitcher, made his debut last season but is recovering from surgery last July to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.

As he rehabbed during spring training, his timetable had him returning possibly around or after the all-star break.
