Ian Desmond returns, Roger Bernadina optioned

Ian Desmond returned tonight after spending the last two games on the paternity list, at home with his wife, Chelsey, as they welcomed Grayson Wesley Desmond, their first child, into the world. “Indescribable,” Desmond said. “It’s the best thing I’ve seen in my entire life.”

In returning Desmond to the 25-man roster, they optioned outfielder Roger Bernadina back to Class AAA Syracuse. Bernadina appeared in both games he spent with the Nationals, getting two hits, including a double, in three at-bats. While the Nationals think Bernadina could play in the majors, they still prefer letting him play every day in the minors.

“When we do get to the point of where we do bring Roger up, it will be of an everyday basis other than a little playing time now and then. We know he’s going to be a big contributor once we do him up here full time.”

Ian Desmond is in the lineup tonight, batting sixth and playing shortstop.
