The Nationals reinstated catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the disabled list after he missed almost two months with a strained right oblique muscle. Rodriguez arrived at Nationals Park today after he played last night as a designated hitter at Class AA Harrisburg.
Rodriguez, however, will not be available tonight. Manager Davey Johnson wants to watch Rodriguez complete a full workout with his own eyes before he returns to game action.
“One of my rules is you’ve got to go through a full workout and I’ve got to see them do it, see them run around,” Johnson said. “I love reports, I love reading them all. But I trust my eyes better than I trust a lot of reports.”
Rodriguez will give the Nationals a third active catcher to go along with Wilson Ramos and Jesus Flores.
One more roster maneuvering issue: The Nationals officials selected Tom Milone from Class AAA Syracuse so he can make his major league debut tonight. The Nationals made room on their 40-man roster for Milone by transferring first baseman Adam LaRoche from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.
