Jason Marquis, Jim Riggleman suspended by MLB

Major League Baseball suspended Nationals starter Jason Marquis five games and Manager Jim Riggleman one game for their role in Sunday’s beanball war with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Both were ejected after Marquis hit Justin Upton with a sinker after both benches had been warned.

Marquis will appeal his suspension. Marquis questioned the warnings and was also adamant he did not throw at Upton on purpose. When Marquis hit Upton, it put the tying run on base as the Nationals held a 1-0 lead, and Marquis found the notion of hitting him intentionally preposterous.

“Why would I want to put more runners on base?” Marquis said Sunday. “It serves no purpose, other than just putting myself in a bigger hole and my team in a bigger hole.”

Riggleman will serve his suspension tonight. Diamondbacks Manager Kirk Gibson was suspended one game, and reliever Esmerling Vasquez was suspended five games for hitting Danny Espinosa after Marquis had been ejected.

As for today, here’s the Nationals lineup against the Giants and left-hander Jonathan Sanchez.

1. Roger Bernadina, LF

2. Ian Desmond, SS

3. Jayson Werth, RF

4. Michael Morse, 1B

5. Danny Espinosa, 2B
