Jayson Werth hitting cleanup in likely preview

(Paul Sancya - AP)
The Nationals today are fielding a somewhat telling lineup, one that includes several regulars. Jayson Werth is hitting cleanup, another clue that Manager Davey Johnson is leaning toward batting fourth should Michael Morse not be ready by opening day. With Ian Desmond, Danny Espinosa and Ryan Zimmerman occupying the first three spots, this seems like a dry run for the top of the order.

On Sunday, by which point Johnson expects to have more clarity on the various injuries afflicting his team, will begin to employ what he sees as his full opening day lineup.

“I’m really comfortable with where the guys are in their conditioning and their timing,” Johnson said. “Starting Sunday, it’ll be more obvious what I’m thinking with how I’m thinking.”

Here’s the full Nationals lineup for today:

1. Ian Desmond, SS

2. Danny Espinosa, 2B

3. Ryan Zimmerman, 3B

4. Jayson Werth, RF

5. Chad Tracy, 1B

6. Jason Michaels, LF

7. Roger Bernadina, CF

8. Jesus Flores, C

9. Jordan Zimmermann, SP
