The Nationals scratched right fielder Jayson Werth from their lineup with right ankle soreness, the team announced roughly 35 minutes before first pitch. Werth did not play Sunday, except to pinch-hit in the ninth inning. He came out for batting practice today, and it is not clear how the injury developed.
Roger Bernadina will replace Werth in the lineup. He will play left field, with Michael Morse moving to right and Bryce Harper remaining in center. Danny Espinosa will move up in the lineup from seventh to sixth, and Bernadina will hit seventh. The rest of the batting order remains the same.
Bernadina has been playing well, hitting .333 since Mark DeRosa suggested he use a lighter bat back in early June.
Since Werth returned from a broken wrist Aug. 2, the Nationals are 9-0 in games he starts. He has hit .400/.500/.514 since he came back over 42 plate appearances.
