The Nationals held Jesus Flores out of the lineup today as a precaution, but his strained right hamstring should no longer be an issue. Flores said he could have played today, and he was cleared to fully participate in any pregame activity, running included.
But with a day off Thursday, Manager Davey Johnson wanted to be certain Flores will not have a recurrence. Johnson also wants to avoid using Flores a pinch-hitter. “Let’s just be cautious on that,” Johnson said.
Flores’s backup, Carlos Maldonado, has a sore back, and so Jhonatan Solano, called up from Class AAA Syracuse yesterday, will make his first career start. Solano doubled in the ninth inning last night in his first career at-bat.
