John Lannan to pitch in Friday’s doubleheader

(Carolyn Kaster - AP)
The Nationals will call up John Lannan from Class AAA Syracuse to start a game in Friday’s doubleheader against the Miami Marlins, Nationals Manager Davey Johnson said.

New rules implemented for this season allow a 26th player to be called up for a doubleheader, and the Nationals have already called on Lannan to do so this season. He played the role of hero in the second game of a doubleheader on July 21 when he stopped a two-game losing streak against the Atlanta Braves and pitched a brilliant seven innings, allowing only two runs on five hits on a rainy night.

Lannan, a 27-year-old left-hander, has a career 3.99 ERA in 129 starts for the Nationals and has been the team’s opening day starter twice. Lannan, making $5 million this season, was sent to Syracuse to following spring training after Ross Detwiler earned the fifth spot in the starting rotation.
