Michael Morse, Ian Desmond won’t play Sunday (UPDATED)

(H. Rumph Jr - AP)

UPDATE, 10:45 p.m.: Nationals Manager Davey Johnson said following Saturday’s game that both Michael Morse and Ian Desmond will not play in Sunday’s series finale against the Phillies. Neither has yet attempted batting practice.

ORIGINAL UPDATE, 6:32 p.m.: The inflammation in Michael Morse’s injured right hand has subsided but the slugger said his it still felt “achy” and won’t play on Saturday. He may miss the rest of the series against the Phillies, which, coupled with a team offday on Monday, could give him three days to rest his hand.

Morse tried gripping a bat on Saturday and said it hurt. Nationals Manager Davey Johnson said the decision on when Morse feels ready to return is up to the player.

Johnson said shortstop Ian Desmond, who missed Friday’s game with a mild hamstring strain that stemmed from a play on Wednesday, is also still resting his injury. Johnson has said Desmond may also miss the rest of the series.

“We’re still on a day-to-day basis but I don’t see any sense in really hurrying anybody back,” he said.

Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick hit Morse on the right hand in the first inning of Friday’s game and, given Morse’s reaction, the Nationals feared the worst. But an X-ray revlead that no bones were broken.
