Major League Baseball disciplined General Manager Mike Rizzo and fined catcher Ivan Rodriguez “an undisclosed amount” for their role Thursday in an altercation with the umpiring crew, according to a league official.
The league considers the matter, which stemmed from a player late in the Nationals’ 1-0 loss to the New York Mets, closed. The official declined to elaborate on the fine or if umpire Phil Cuzzi, who filed a complaint against Rizzo, would also be disciplined. Rizzo has not returned an email seeking comment.
In the ninth inning Thursday, Cuzzi called Jayson Werth out on a close play at first base even though replays clearly showed Mets first baseman Daniel Murphy came off the base and Werth would have beaten the throw, anyway.
Afterward, Nationals personnel, including Rodriguez, verbally clashed with the umpires outside the visiting clubhouse. Rizzo, though, said Friday that his incident with the umps had “absolutely nothing to do with” the controversial play to end the game.
