Before Saturday’s game against the Braves in Atlanta, Nationals Manager Davey Johnson came across a face he had not seen in a while: Jay Howell. As manager of the New York Mets, Johnson asked that umpires check the glove of Howell, a Los Angeles Dodgers reliever, during the 1988 National League Championship Series. Howell was ejected that day for having pine tar on his glove.
Johnson did the same this season to Tampa Bay Rays reliever Joel Peralta, touching off a firestorm between him and Rays Manager Joe Maddon. So, when Howell saw Johnson on Saturday, the first thing Howell said was, “You at it again.”
“He made an early exit,” Johnson added. “It didn’t help in that one, either. So, it was fun to see him.”
Stephen Strasburg (9-2, 2.60 ERA) is on the mound. As always, talk about the game here.
