Nationals designate Matt Stairs for assignment

In order to make room for recently acquired Jonny Gomes on the 25-man roster, the Nationals designated 43-year-old pinch hitter Matt Stairs for assignment.

Stairs went 10 for 65 with a double, nine walks, two RBI and 23 strikeouts in 74 plate appearances, good for a .154/.257/.169 slash line and a 22 OPS+. The Nationals signed Stairs to a minor league deal in the offseason and used him almost exclusively as a pinch-hitter, starting Stairs in just eight games.

Gomes, acquired yesterday from the Cincinnati Reds for minor leaguers Bill Rhinehart and Chris Manno, will be available tonight for the Nationals.
