Brace yourselves: it’s Aug. 17, the 119th game of the season, and for the first time this season, the following players will be on the field at once, in no particular order: Ian Desmond, Michael Morse, Jayson Werth, Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman, Adam LaRoche and Danny Espinosa. Re-read that again if you need to. After missing 25 games, Desmond is back. The team with baseball’s best record got another boost.
And, the Nationals are home after a 10-game road trip and has the most home games remaining of any contending team in baseball. “Great feeling,” Manager Davey Johnson said. “I’m not really a road warrior.”
Ross Detwiler (6-5, 3.18 ERA) is on the mound after switching spots with Edwin Jackson, and will oppose Mets left-hander Johan Santana (6-8, 4.58 ERA). Talk about the game here.
