The travelling band that is the New York Yankees, the first-place team in the American League East, is in town to face the National League East-leading Washington Nationals. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, an ardent Yankees fan, chatted with players during batting practice. Manager Davey Johnson said it was an important series to measure up against one of the league’s top teams so far and third baseman Ryan Zimmerman said different because both teams are competitive compared to years past. “This tests your merit,” Johnson said. Gio Gonzalez is on the mound to face Phil Hughes.
