Nationals-Yankees lineups: Adam LaRoche misses second of three games

Before Saturday’s game, Manager Davey Johnson said shortstop Ian Desmond, who has played in all but one of the Nationals 62 games, could be held out of the game with a nagging side injury – possibly an oblique. Johnson, cautious with little injuries, was waiting to set the lineup until Desmond was evaluated – and it turns out, he is good enough to play. Desmond will start and hit fifth.

First baseman Adam LaRoche, however, will miss his second of three games. The Nationals’ best hitter so far this season fouled a ball off of his foot in Tuesday’s game in Toronto. The Nationals are facing a left-hander in Andy Pettitte (3-2, 2.81 ERA).

Tyler Moore will play first, Danny Espinosa will leadoff and Xavier Nady starts in left field.
