Rick Ankiel still out with ‘nagging’ wrist injury

Rick Ankiel will miss his second consecutive game tonight with a sore right wrist, which he hurt Monday night while diving to make a catch in center field. Jerry Hairston will replace him in center, with Alex Cora filling in for Hairston at third base. There’s a good chance Ankiel will return tomorrow, but his wrist did not progress from yesterday to today as much as the Nationals hoped.

“He’s making a little progress, but he did a little more to that we thought,” Riggleman said. “I thought maybe it was just kind of rolled over it and a little uncomfortable, a little swelling. But it’s a nagging thing. He’s just not real comfortable going out, taking a lot of batting practice right now or anything like that.”

Ankiel has not received an MRI for his wrist. In “an emergency situation,” Riggleman said, Ankiel could be available tonight.
