Nationals Manager Davey Johnson plans to give third baseman Ryan Zimmerman a day off tomorrow. (That’s if the Nationals and Marlins play; the forecast does not look so hot.) Zimmerman fouled a ball off his left foot last night. Zimmerman is fine and in the lineup today, but Johnson wants to give Zimmerman, who has started all 16 games this year, an extended break with the scheduled off day Monday.
“I don’t even ask about Zim getting hurt,” Johnson said. “I’ll probably give him tomorrow off to give him two days. He probably won’t like that.”
If Zimmerman sits, Johnson said the Nationals will start either Chad Tracy or Stephen Lombardozzi at third base. Since Tracy is getting a start today at first base and Lombardozzi hasn’t started since Monday, it seems like a safe bet that Lombardozzi will be the choice.
After a ragged offensive start to the season, Zimmerman has started to turn it around. He has hit in four straight games and is 6 for 17 with a double, a home run and a walk over that period.
