Shairon Martis signed by the Pirates

Left-handed starter Shairon Martis, a longtime Nationals minor leaguer and one-time member of their major league rotation, has signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates as a minor league free agent, according to Baseball America.

Martis, 24, went 8-6 this season at Class AA Harrisburg with a 3.05 ERA and 146 strikeouts in 133 innings. After Martis started the season in extended spring training because he had arrived to camp out of shape, Nationals officials raved about how Martis rededicated himself to the sport. In August, Martis threw a no-hitter and struck out nine as Harrisburg surged toward a playoff spot.

In 2009, at 21, Martis began the season in the Nationals’ rotation and won his first five decisions. But he stumbled from there, and after 15 starts he had a 5.25 record and the Nationals had lost six straight games he had started. They sent him to the minors, and Martis has not pitched in the majors since. And now it seems he never will, at least not for the Nationals.
