Stephen Strasburg threw a three-inning simulated game yesterday in Viera, Fla. and “threw extremely well,” Nationals pitching coordinator Spin Williams said. The Nationals made the simulated start as realistic as they could, with another pitcher recording three outs against batters between Strasburg’s innings as Strasburg watched.
In total, Strasburg threw roughly 50 pitches. The latest simulated game shows how near Strasburg is making a minor league rehab start, his next significant step in returning from Tommy John surgery. “I think he’s getting close,” Williams said.
Strasburg could return to the majors in September if he continues to make progress, but only if the Nationals deem him ready.
