Stephen Strasburg reached another milestone in his comeback from Tommy John surgery recently, beginning to throw curveballs during his bullpen sessions in Viera, Fla. He is throwing the curves at 50-percent effort, General Manager Mike Rizzo said, but Strasburg is excited about it. Here’s what he tweeted yesterday evening:
@stras37: Felt strong today and curve ball was working much better today for the 2nd time throwing some. Pretty excited for Saturday one step closer!
So what happens Saturday? Nothing special, Rizzo said. It’s just the next day for Strasburg to throw another bullpen session.
It’s still a little too early for the Nationals to be planning a precise schedule for Strasburg’s minor league rehab games, but he’s getting closer. For the sake of context, Jordan Zimmermann had his Tommy John surgery in late August of 2009 and pitching his first minor league rehab game on July 4 last year. Strasburg had his Tommy John surgery on Sept. 3 last year.
