The Nationals rotation and other rainout notes

With tonight’s game rained out and rescheduled for Thursday at 2:20 p.m. the Nationals will keep their pitching rotation intact, simply moving each starter back one day. Chien-Ming Wang, Ross Detwiler and Jordan Zimmermann will still start the next three games.

Wang has made two starts since returning to the majors following a torn capsule in his right shoulder and major surgery. The extra day of rest “probably won’t hurt him,” Manager Davey Johnson said.

The Nationals lost a day off Thursday between this series and a three-game weekend series in Philadelphia, but they were fine with the resolution. The Nationals had planned on flying from Chicago to Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon, anyway, and they will land in Philadelphia only a few hours later than they would have.

The Nationals and Cubs discussed playing a split doubleheader either Tuesday or Wednesday, but “I think everybody wanted to do what we’re doing,” Johnson said.

For Johnson, the rain delay served as an odd milestone. The Nationals had not been rained out since he took over June 27, which means Johnson had not experienced a major league postponement in 11 years.

“It just feels strange,” he said.
